Arapahoe vs Smoky Hill 2/1/2012

Warriors Hold Off A Hard Charging Buffalo Herd

The Buffaloes of Smoky Hill came to the Warrior’s den tonight wanting to reverse a stinging 2-point home loss the first time they tangled. The game was sloppy at the start, with turnovers and unnecessary fouls by both sides. But the Warriors led 10-6 after one, and soon stretched the lead to 7 when Scott Ayers nailed a nifty 12-footer off an Angelo Garcia assist. Then Warrior miscues against a 1/2 court trap allowed the Herd to creep back to a 15-15 tie at half-time. In the 3rd, Jonathan Kadarisman stepped it up big-time, nailing a 3-pointer, finishing aggressive drives, and hitting his free throws. With Trevor Johnson nailing 3’s, the Warriors pushed the lead back up to 27-20 after 3. But Smoky Hill turned the herd loose with a full court trapping D, and climbed back in to only trail by 3 with 4:27 remaining, so Coach Escue called a time-out to re-orient the Warrior’s attack. Will Danuser played big, scoring on put-backs, mid-range jumpers, and converting FT’s to help push the lead back up to 8 with 2:20 left. From there, the Warriors handled the desperate full-court press well, and closed it out from the charity stripe by calmly hitting 7 of 8 (ending up 13 of 20 for the game, and Smoky Hill was 14 for 34.) The Warrior’s record now stands at 8-7 entering the final regular season game versus Grandview.

Next up:  Grandview at Arapahoe / Fri, 6pm

Despite Scrappy Effort, Cougars Pull Away in 4th

With the absence of their leading scorer to a nasty sprain (Trey Atwell), and a top rebounder and defender to a tryout with the Chicago Bears (perhaps it was a lacrosse event?), and missing a scrappy hustler and playmaker to illness (Scott Ayers), the Warriors knew they had to play efficiently to keep up with the full-strength Cougars at Cherokee Trail. And for two and a half quarters they scrapped and hustled and were within 4 points in a ragged and poorly officiated game, until the Cougars pulled away to a final score of 55-33. Although Cherokee Trail nailed some quick 3’s at the start to take a 17-9 lead after one, the Warriors closed the gap behind the drives and shooting of Jimmy Hall and long-range bombs by Trevor Johnson, to only trail 24-18 at the break. The Warriors cranked up their vaunted defense in the 3rd and put a stranglehold on the Cougars offense for a full 5 minutes, including a stuff block by a leaping Lou Sugo. When Daylon Stutz flexed his muscles on the boards and made a put-back at the 3:20 mark, the Warriors were only down 26-22. But then the Cougars reversed the trend, and climbed back to a 34-24 lead after 3. With a couple of long-range bombs to start the 4th, the Cougars started to pull away and the Warriors couldn’t stem the tide, eventually falling 55-33. The Warriors now stand even at 7-7 entering the final 2 conference games of the season.

Next up: Wed, 2/1/2012, 4:30 Smoky Hill at Arapahoe

Trevor Johnson lines a three-pointer up from the baseline.

Jonathan Kadarisman tries his hand at the baseline drive and attracts company.

This defender decided that a full on body check was the only way to stop Marco Garcia (it's the shoes that are the deciding factor) and it resulted in shooting three from the line.

Angelo Garcia was hoping for a little daylight on this fast break.

Tanner Sparks tries to cut one to the inside on this drive and he is headed for the line to shoot two.

The Cougar defender is late on the break as Jimmy Hall sets his sights on the hoop outside the arch.

Arapahoe vs Eaglecrest 1/25/2012

Warriors hang tough deep into the 4th Quarter

The Eaglecrest Raptors strutted into the Warrior’s den tonight sporting a confident 10-2 record, with only 1 loss in conference play so far, and the Warriors gave them all they could handle until deep into the final frame. With 6:10 remaining in the game, the Warriors were down by only one, 46-45, after they had worked an offensive play to perfection and sprung Tanner Sparks free for an easy bucket underneath. But a couple turnovers and an offensive dry spell allowed Eaglecrest to pull away for the final margin of 65-49. The Warriors got off to a sluggish start at the beginning of the game, and Eaglecrest was raining 3’s from about anywhere, so the Warriors quickly found themselves on the wrong end of 16-8 score halfway through the first. But then the Warriors buckled down and held Eaglecrest scoreless for over 5 minutes and chipped away at the lead, eventually knotting the score at 16.  At that point, Trey Atwell went on a tear – scoring the next 9 points with a 3, then a couple deuces, and when the Raptors fouled to try to slow him down, he hit his free throws, also. With Troy Golding contributing some nice offensive put-backs and Will Danuser being a monster on the boards, the Warriors ended the first half up 30-25. To start the 3rd quarter, Eaglecrest came out in a gambling 1/2 court trap that rattled the Warriors and fed the Raptor’s offense. But with Angelo Garcia draining 3’s and Jimmy Hall scoring inside and outside, along with Lou Sugo nailing shots and Will Danuser dominating the boards, the Warriors were down only 3 at 48-45 with 5:33 remaining in the game. But from there the Raptors kept up the pressure and the Warriors cooled off, allowing Eaglecrest to pull away at the end.  Great effort against the conference leaders, boys!

Next up:  6pm Friday, 1/27 at Cherokee Trail

Jimmy Hall drives through the defenders on his way to the hoop.

Big Man Troy Golding showing his powerful inside game going up strong.

Angelo Garcia takes a clear shot from outside the 3-point arch.

Left hand green, right foot yellow, left foot red - let's play "TWISTER".  Lou Sugo threads his way through the defenders.

Tanner Sparks sets his sights on the rim with this outside jumper.

Scott Ayers sends one floating over the defender to the bucket.

Marco Garcia knows what to do with the Rock when they give him a good look for three.

Trevor Johnson shows solid form as he sends the roundball skyward towards the hoop.

Warriors Block Trailblazers’ Path
Defend Home Turf to Split Regular Season

What a battle! Even though the Warriors never let the Trailblazers lead, the outcome wasn’t secured until the final horn sounded, with high energy and intensity from both sides.  (And true to form, when the Warriors hold their opponents to 40 points or less, good things come their way.)  Wanting to avenge an earlier 14-point loss to the Trailblazers, Coach Escue had the host Warriors ready from the start to defend our home turf.  With the Warriors feeding it inside, Overland’s fluid 6’5” center found himself watching from the bench with 2 fouls after less than a minute gone. Although Overland nailed a late bucket to knot the score at 9 at the end of one, the Warriors started taking advantage in the paint in the 2nd, and Jonathan Kadarisman played with a vengeance – at one point grabbing an offensive board on the left side of the rim, driving a complete ‘NASCAR lap’ (left turns only) around the ENTIRE lane to score on a right-side lay-up. Although only 2 for 9 at the charity stripe, the Warriors remained ahead 19-16 at the break. In the 3rd, Overland’s center again couldn’t handle the Warriors’ drives, and was pulled less than 2 minutes in with his 3rd transgression. So Overland ratcheted up the outside game, and their sharpshooter (old enough to vote?) nailed 3 trifectas in short order. But the Warriors battled hard on the boards, and with contributions from Lou Sugo and Daylon Stutz, they clung to a 31-30 lead entering the final quarter. Coach Escue wisely neutralized the Trailblazers’ sharpshooter by having big man Troy Golding stick like glue way out on the perimeter, and Arapahoe then stretched the lead to 7 with 5 minutes to go. Even though the Trailblazers kept slashing to the rim, multiple Warriors would step in with great help defense to contest each shot and deny any easy buckets. Arapahoe then closed it out from the line for a hard-fought and well-earned 45-40 win to split the season series. Offensively, Trey Atwell and Jonathan Kadarisman led with double-digits each, and Tanner Sparks nailed multiple key shots plus took a bone-rattling charge in the 2nd.

Next up: Eaglecrest at Arapahoe, Wed 4:30pm

Daylon Stutz is giving some solid effort getting through these defenders.

As Trevor Johnson clears out underneath, Johnathan Kadarisma goes to the rim.

Angelo Garcia goes for the hard drive and the soft finger-roll finish at the bucket.

Taking a charge looks so much easier when the coach draw's it up.  Tanner Sparks can speak first-hand.  OUCH!!!

Lou Sugo shows what it takes to take the jumper from the baseline

When Will Danuser wants to take it to the hoop, he is unstoppable.

Inside or outside - Trey Atwell is always attacking and scoring.

Tanner Sparks may get knocked down, but he is right back on the scoring path.

Momentum shifts as Warriors handle fired-up Bruins

What a show! The Warriors entered the dimly lit Bruin’s den tonight and met a fired-up bunch eager to avenge an early season loss. The Warriors took hard punches and the momentum swung back and forth, but the Warriors got clutch plays near the end from several contributors, made one final defensive stand and escaped the den with a 38-36 victory, sweeping the regular season from Creek. With the Warriors ahead 11-6 after one, the Warriors pulled out their aggressive half-court trap to start the second, causing the Bruins to rush their shots. Troy Golding was big in the lane, using his considerable length to make Creek think twice after he completely stuffed a Creek shooter, and was a force on the boards, along with Scott Ayers defending like a fiend on the perimeter. With the Warriors making all their free-throw attempts (6 for 6), they were up 20-17 at half. Creek charged back with quick strikes and took the lead just 40 seconds into the 3rd quarter and was looking to pull away. With the Warriors settling for perimeter 3-point attempts, they had a dismal offensive quarter, only nailing one bucket, and allowed the Bruins to creep ahead 25-23 at the end of 3. Then both sides turned the dogs loose in the 4th, scrapping for loose balls, contesting shots, and pulling the trigger. Marco Garcia nailed a 3 to pull the Warriors within 3, and when Jonathan Kadarisman sank a free throw at 2:19, things were all knotted at 33 and it was gut-check time. Trey Atwell nailed a pull-up 2-pointer, then Angelo Garcia sank both ends of a 1 and 1, putting the Warriors up by 4 with 1:04 to go, but the Bruins were pressing hard. After a Creek time-out with 15 seconds to go, they inbounded and were fouled on a driving lay-up, making both FT’s to creep within one, 37-36. On the ensuing inbounds play, Creek immediately fouled Trey Atwell, who sank a pressure FT for a 2-point lead.  With only 5.8 seconds left, Creek called time to set up their final play, and came out with a well-executed perimeter pick that gave their shooting guard a good 3-point look – but Trey Atwell recovered and leaped and deflected the winning attempt, preserving a 38-36 victory for the Warriors!
Next up: home game vs Overland at 6pm on Friday.

Will Danuser takes a rare opportunity to get a head start driving down the lane.

There seems to be no stopping the high flying offense of Trey Atwell.

As the defense tightens, Troy Golding tries to locate another Warrior inside the paint.

The Warriors get themselves into position to start tightening up the defense off the inbound.

The Bruins defense started right off the inbound in the back court.  Marco Garia is looking for some help from Will Danuser.

The final score was "lights out" at 38-36 with the Warrior victory.

Arapahoe vs Mullen 1/13/2012

Warriors outlast the Mustangs

The Warriors hosted a re-energized team from Mullen on Friday, as the Mustangs were coming off their first win of the season 2 days earlier, but the Warriors withstood the assault and evened their record at 5-5. The Warriors charged out to a 10-8 lead after one, but several 3’s by the Mullen guards sparked them, and with the Warriors’ shots not falling, they found themselves down 19-15 at the half. To open the 2nd half, the Warriors came out in a ferocious 1/2 court trap, and created 3 consecutive turnovers by Mullen to jump back on top. But the Mustangs chipped away at the lead again, and the home team was down 26-24 after 3. In the 4th, the Warriors started finding better scoring opportunities, especially inside, as Jonathan Kadarisman was not to be denied with strong drives to the hoop. But the Mustangs would not quit, and pulled within 2 with 2:00 to go. The Mustangs then wanted to sit back in a tight zone, so the Warriors played keep-away until they matched up man-to-man, and from there the Warriors finished off them off by being solid from the charity stripe, nailing 4 of 5 in the final stretch and pulling away to a 45-37 victory.  Jonathan Kadarisman and Trey Atwell shouldered the bulk of the scoring load for the Warriors, and the full team effort on the 1/2 court trap kept the Mustangs in check.

Jonathan Kadarisman is not to be denied on this drive to the hoop.

Trey Atwell shows his body control as he pulls up and squares up for a short jumper.

Coach Escue decides it's time to talk with the troops in this close match-up.

Marco...Polo...Marco...Polo...  There is nobody in sight as Marco Garcia takes this outside jumper uncontested.

Angelo Garcia takes his game to the inside as he takes the rock to the rim.

The Warriors are truly putting a corral around the Mustangs of Mullen.

Arapahoe at Grandview 1/11/2012

Relentless Wolves devour Warriors

The Warriors faced a pack of ravenous Wolves from Grandview tonight in the Wolves’ own den, and came on the losing end of a 67-35 count.  Tight, in-your-face man-2-man and tremendous help defense kept the Warrior’s offense out of sync all night, and the Warriors battled for every point they could. On offense, the Wolves were sizzling from beyond the arc, nailing 11 out of 17 three-pointers, with 10 different players contributing. Although the loss stings, the Warriors defensive effort kept them closer than most other teams, as the Wolves have been tearing up the league by 40 and 50 point margins. And the Warriors did have 9 players crack the scoring column.  Next up:  a rematch with Mullen this Friday at home.

Troy Golding squares up for a good look in the middle of the paint and the defenders.

Trevor Johnson looks to take the inside line to the bucket.

It's an all out effort to regain possession of the rock.

Scott Ayers is pushing the ball upcourt as he looks for something to open up inside.

Jimmy Hall looks like he is getting inside and drawing a lot of attention from a pack of Wolves.

The Warriors are setting up the offense from the inbound - everyone shift!

Arapahoe at Smoky Hill 1/7/2012

Warriors Hunt Down Buffs

Was it the 10am start that had the Warriors sleepwalking through the first quarter? At the end of the 1st, they found themselves down to the host Buffs 16-4, and not much was clicking.  But an aggressive 1/2 court trap defense got their brains engaged and knocked the Buffs off track, leading to several breakaway layups to spark the Warriors.  With tenacious D causing rushed shots, the Warriors kept charging and knotted things at 23-23 by intermission. The 3rd quarter was tight all the way, but not much was falling from 3-point land for either team – except for Angelo Garcia, who scored all 9 Warrior points on 3’s, and the score was knotted at 32 after 3. In the 4th, the Warriors’ trap again caused Buff miscues, and the bellicose Buff’s coach called time-out with 4:35 remaining to settle his team after the Warriors went up 37-36.  Following the time-out, the Buffs came out in a 2-3 zone, but Coach Escue directed the Warriors to play catch until the Buffs had to pull out of the zone and match up man-2-man, and it was a fight to the finish. The Warriors crashed the offensive boards hard and got repeated opportunities, and then the Buffs did the same. At the 1:22 mark the Warriors clung to a narrow 42-40 lead. Then one of the Buffs’ stars stole a pass and was headed for a lay-up – but Tanner Sparks held his ground and valiantly took the charge, and the Warriors held on to win 42-40.  Hats off to the Warrior’s full team effort on defense that put the Buffs back in the corral after the rough start, and their record now stands at 4-4 at the halfway point of the regular season.

Angelo Garcia squares up for a great look along the baseline for a three-pointer.

Boxing out is a fundamental used well on this shot.

Daylon Stutz sets up camp on the low post and draws a "leaner".

OK - everyone have a partner?  One the count of three - defend.  1..2..3..

Today's game against the Buffaloes took a little extra strategy by Coach Escue.

And that strategy paid off with a close final with the Warriors on top by two.

Arapahoe vs Cherokee Trail 1/4/2012

Warriors can't quite snare Cougars

In a fast-paced back and forth game, the Warriors held their own against an aggressive team from Cherokee Trail.  The Warriors started off strong and led 13-12 after the 1st, then got a bit predictable on offense and gave up some ‘pick-6’ interceptions on perimeter passes in the 2nd quarter.  The Warriors struggled getting good looks, but fought hard, and nailed 10 of 14 free throws in that quarter – accounting for all their points. At the break, the visiting Cougars had taken the lead by a 31-23 count.  The 3rd quarter saw a flurry of good shooting and strong offensive rebounding, and the Warriors hustled themselves back into the lead by scoring 20 points in the frame, and contesting every shot on defense.  Entering the final frame, the Warriors were up 43-40.  In the 4th, the Cougars scrapped back to take a 7 point lead midway thru the fourth, which the Warriors then closed to 3 late in the game. But the Warriors could not close the gap, ending up on the short end of a 65-59 score, despite solid offensive output from Jimmy Hall, Angelo Garcia, Trey Atwell, Marco Garcia, and Trevor Johnson.  Next up: a Saturday morning matinee at Smoky Hill at 10am.

Jimmy Hall shows solid form as he squares up for the jumper.

Trevor Johnson looks to cut inside around the defender and head to the hoop.

Tanner Sparks is the center of attention from a pack of Cougars.

Jonathan Kadarisman will give it his all to pull in the rebound.

Marco Garcia runs into some interference on his way to down the lane.

Trey Atwell shows confidence and composure on the way to the rim from the left side.

Arapahoe at Eaglecrest 12/16/2011
Warriors Raked by Raptors

With the Warriors jumping out to a quick 5-4 lead, the Raptors sounded an alarm – a fire alarm, actually.  After the building was cleared and the hunky firemen interrupted their calendar-posing to come on-site, it was deemed safe to return. The host Raptors re-started quickly and jumped out to a 10-7 lead at the end of one, but the Warriors were definitely in the game. The 2nd quarter was a different story – the host Raptors were ‘on fire’ from beyond the arc, nailing 3 of 4 three-pointers, and despite good looks and good shot selection, the Warriors were ice-cold – even from the charity stripe. (Quick – someone pull the alarm again . . . )  Intermission saw the Warriors on the wrong side of a 24-14 score.  In the 2nd half, the Warriors couldn’t keep the wraps on the speedy Raptors, as the hosts kept their poise against an aggressive and active Warrior’s press.  Even with strong rebounding on the offensive boards and open looks, the Warriors couldn’t get their shots to fall, and the Raptors notched a 46-28 win.  The Warriors' record stands at 3-3 as they enter the new year, next battling Cherokee Trail at 4:30 on Jan. 4th at AHS.

Arapahoe at Overland 12/13/2011

A Tale of Two Halves

Tonight’s tussle between the Warriors and the Overland Trailblazers was a tale of 2 different halves, with the Warriors battling to a 19-17 advantage at the break, only to be outgunned from both inside and outside in the 2nd half to eventually fall 46-32.  Early on the Warriors were balanced, confident, and efficient, busting out to a 13-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, and were aided by several unforced errors by their opponent.  But in the 2nd quarter the Trailblazers starting finding the right combination and began utilizing their fluid 6’5” center, and the momentum began to shift, taking the lead 30 seconds into the 3rd quarter. With the shot-blocking presence of the Trailblazer’s big man down low and the athletic man-2-man abilities on the perimeter, open looks didn’t come easily.  Combined with a contagious ‘off’ shooting night, the  Warriors found themselves down by 8 at the end of the 3rd frame, 32-24, and couldn’t get their offense flowing in the final frame, bowing out by a 46-32 spread.  The Warriors’ record now stands at 3-2 heading into Friday’s match-up at Eaglecrest.

Warriors Rein in Mustangs

The Warriors started solidly tonight against the host Mullen Mustangs, leading 13 to 9 at the end of the 1st Quarter.  With some nice passing and assists, the Warriors stretched the lead to 10 early in the 2nd.  But the Mustangs kept battling, and along with some loose ball-control by the Warriors, the Mustangs chipped away to within 5 at the half, 20-15.  Arapahoe then opened it up again with inside scoring and dominant rebounding by the big men, Jonathan Kadarisman, Troy Golding, and Daylon Stutz, along with strong help defense contesting every Mullen shot, and stretched the lead to 14 at the end of the 3rd quarter.  The Warriors stumbled a bit against Mullen’s aggressive full-court trap, allowing them to creep within 9 at the 4:15 mark, but Coach Escue got the Warriors back in the saddle during a time-out, and from then on good ball movement neutralized the press.  The Warriors then closed out with accuracy from the charity stripe by several players, pulling away to a 47-32 victory. Trey Atwell and Jonathan Kadarisman shouldered much of the offensive load with double-digit scoring, aided by solid contributions from Will Danuser and Trevor Johnson.

Arapahoe vs Heritage 12/5

Eagles Claw Back to Defeat Warriors

It was a mellow first half that saw the Warriors lead from the start, and harass the Heritage Eagles into poor shot selection and lousy shooting.  But as soon as the 3rd quarter began, the Eagles started clawing away at the Warrior’s 21 to 11 half-time lead with an aggressive half-court trap that disrupted the Warrior’s offensive flow.  While the Warriors still led by 3 at the end of the 3rd, once Heritage nailed a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the 4th quarter to knot things at 28 it seemed to spark even more defensive intensity with the 1/2 court trap, and Arapahoe too often went for the bait.  The lead teetered back and forth, with clutch free throws by Will Danuser and Jonathan Kadarisman providing a slim 1 point lead at the 2:30 mark, followed by a Heritage 3-pointer that was then matched by Angelo Garcia’s trey with a minute to go, knotting the game again at 40.  With 37 seconds remaining, an open 15-footer by Heritage found it’s mark, and the Warriors could not answer one more time, losing 44 to 40 in a very hard-fought game.

Troy Golding comes face-to-face with the Trailblazers "Big Man".

Will Danuser shows great form in keeping your body between the ball and the defender as you go to the hoop.

Angelo Garcia shows how some quick feet can get you around your defender.

Will Danuser looks to get "all ball" on the Warriors defense of this Trailblazer's shot.

Tanner Sparks eyes a small opening as he gets set to drive to the hoop.
